Photo Retouching Process

Photo retouching differs from photo restoration in that the goal of retouching is to enhance the original photo in some way. (The goal of restoration is to bring a photo back to its original state, not to enhance it.) Photo retouching involves such things as bringing out the details in shadow areas, adjusting contrast or lighting, balancing color, blurring the background to bring attention to the subject of a photo, removing red-eye, removing blemishes, whitening teeth, reducing wrinkles, slimming, etc.

Our photo retouching service

Similar to our restoration process, Lotus Flower Imaging Solutions uses digital techniques to retouch both old and recent photos. The original photos or negatives are scanned into a digital format and all photo retouching work is then performed on a computer. The retouched photo is then printed with your choice of either archival printer or traditional photographic process.

We all have photos that do not do justice to the special moment we were trying to capture. Luckily, there are many ways to improve a disappointing photo of a treasured memory. Of course, some photos need more work than others to bring out their best. Because of this, the cost for our photo retouching service is based on the amount of work needed to improve a photo to its best possible condition. In general, the amount of photo retouching needed can be categorized in the following ways:

Minor Retouching: Red eye removal, minor color/contrast balance.

Moderate Retouching: Any combination of 2-3 of the following: blemish removal, wrinkle reduction, lightening dark shadows, reducing "shiny spots" on faces, brightening eyes, whitening teeth, average color balance.

Extensive Retouching: Body slimming, extreme change in color balance, extensive shadow or highlight balancing to bring out details, any combination of four or more of the following: blemish removal, wrinkle reduction, reducing "shiny spots" on faces, brightening eyes, whitening teeth.

These categories are provided to allow you to estimate the condition of your photograph. Lotus Flower Imaging Solutions considers each photo to be unique and the amount of work that will be necessary to retouch a photo can only be determined once we actually see the photo and discuss the possible options with you.

Note that some photos are not good candidates for retouching. Specifically, it is extremely difficult (if not impossible) to add focus to an out-of-focus photo. If you have such a photo, we would be happy to take a look at it and let you know what we think can be done to improve the photo.
